History of St. Anne's

 

1919

Prior to 1919, the closest place of worship for Catholics in the Bellview area of Pensacola was 12 miles away.  Bellview's first mass was held in the "Union Church ",  a community building shared by various denomination. 

1936-1937

On June 21, 1936 Sisters of the Trinitarian Order, who held catechism lessons in the Union Church, solicited donations for land on which a Catholic Church could be built, and soon had many offers.  The Sisters chose the present site for its central location within the community of Bellview.  Ground was broken April 13, 1937.   Through various generous donations and fund raising events, the church was built.   Dedication took place on June 13, 1937, by Archbishop T. J. Toolen, Bishop of Mobile.  St. Anne's Church , now a reality became a mission of Little Flower Parish in Myrtle Grove. 

1964-65

St. Anne's became a Parish on January 17, 1964 with 42 families and a new priest, Fr. John Licari.  The predecessor of today's Round-Up then called a "Spring Round-Up" was first held in May 1964.  In 1965 the rectory was built.  A surplus Navy barracks became Scarlet O'Hara Hall. 

1967

In 1967, 10 acres of land adjoining the church was purchased for the parish by Archbishop Toolen, and "Bellview Junction", our permanent Western Ghost Town was created.  IN 1971, the Round-Up outdrew Disneyworld on October 1st thru 3rd by over 20,000 people.  

1977-1979

The first groundbreaking ceremony for the new church was held in 1977.  The Swiss-style church was dedicated December 23, 1977, already completely paid for by Round-Up proceeds.  All brick floors and walkways were provided through the courtesy of Rosie O'Grady's.  All fieldstone inside and outside of the church came from Tennessee.  All wood beams in the church are cedar and came from Mobile.  The hand carved statues in the church came from Italy abnd were gifts from friends and parishionerrs of St. Anne's.  All of the pews are made of Cherry and came from Texas.   All of the chandeliers came from Texas also.  The stained glass came from Germany.  The Last Supper Altar is hand carved and came from Italy.  The Presidential chair came from France.  All of the doors were hand carved in Pensacola.   All Altar candelabra are of solid brass and were given to the Church by the Maryknoll Amerivan Missionary.  The Vigillight and Paschal light stand are also of solid brass.  In 1979, the Gazebo and courtyard were added. 

1987-Present

In 1987 the Memorial Fountain was built.  In 1998 ground was broken for a new Family Life Center.   The Center was completed in may of 1999 and was dedicated in July of 1999.   Currently the parish is made up of more than 850 families.
